Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

Purpose & Function

The Fontana Police Department evaluates all plans for all new and proposed construction in the City using the principles of first generation Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED):
  • Access control
  • Surveillance
  • Territorial control
  • Maintenance

The Department also utilizes the principles of second generation CPTED:
  • Social cohesion
  • Connectedness
  • Capacity
  • Culture

CPTED involves the design of a project so that it promotes safer, more viable communities, while at the same time encouraging people to familiarize themselves with their neighbors and surrounding community.
