Sex Offender Registration Requirements

Time Requirements for Registration:
Sex offenders are required to register with local law enforcement agencies within five working days of being released from a local jail or state prison or completion of any alternate sentence.

Sex offenders must also re-register every year within five working days of his or her birthday, moving, or changing his or her name.  With few exceptions, the registration requirement is a lifetime mandate.

This section also requires re-registration within five working days when a registrant moves into or out of the jurisdiction.  This section requires notification to both the jurisdiction you are moving from and the jurisdiction you are moving into.  This requires the same appearance and registration process as is encountered during your annual registration process.

Registration of Multiple Addresses:
A registrant who has more than one residence (address or location) at which he/she regularly resides must register all residences.  This may include registration in multiple jurisdictions.

Transient Updates of Registration:
A person who has no residence address, must update his/her registration once every 30-days in addition to the requirement that he/she register within five working days of coming into, changing residence or location within, a jurisdiction.

The 30-day update must be made in person at the law enforcement agency in whose jurisdiction he/she is located at the time of the 60-day update.

Registration of Out of State Students and Employees:
Students and employees who reside out of state or go to school or work in California must register as sex offenders here if they are required to register as such in their state of residency.  The student/employee must register in the jurisdiction where he attends school or is employed.

During annual registration, the registered sex offender is required to verify his or her name and address or temporary location.  Failure to register properly may be a felony and may count as a "Third Strike" (Penal Code Section 290).

To Further Clarify the Process:
Despite any changes in your registration status throughout the year,  you are still required to participate in the annual registration process.  There are NO exceptions to your annual registration process.

  • If you registered due to a move you still have to re-register within five days before or after your birthday each year.  Therefore, you might end up registering several times between birthdays.
