PRESS RELEASE
Knopf Senior Center Selected as the Feature Center of the Quarter
Release Date: February 6, 2008
The Mayor and City Council proudly select Knopf Senior Center as the feature center of the quarter. The facility which is located at 8384 Cypress Avenue offers area seniors ages 55 and older with a variety of services and activities that enable seniors to be independent, healthy, and social.
The Knopf Senior Center has an experienced staff that hosts daily and monthly events to include birthday celebrations, holidays, visits from the county nurse for health assessments, cinema features, quilting classes, computer classes, and tai chi. Knopf is also the place to go for arthritis exercise, craft clubs, bingo, T.O.P.S., the Red Hat Society, and more.
Bill Brantley, community services coordinator for the Knopf Senior Center, a graduate of Fontana High School and Arizona State University alumni, has been with the City of Fontana Community Services Department for sixteen years. While Brantley has been involved with a variety of programs to include running two neighborhood centers and sports programs, the Senior Center has given him the opportunity to experience a different avenue and clientele.
"The most important services that our staff offers the city's senior population are the referrals and information that connect them with agencies who will assist clients to make decisions or help them through situations that are entirely unique to aging citizens," says Brantley adding, "Our most popular programs are the Senior Nutrition Program and the Senior Transportation Program. The nutrition program serves 74 people daily while the transportation program averages 80 trips per day to doctor appointments, grocery stores, dentists, and more."
The Senior Lunch program provides home-cooked meals Monday through Friday for $3 per person. The Senior Transportation program is a para-transit program for Fontana-senior residents. The service is $25 per year. A special Senior Shopping Day is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
In September, 2007 the Knopf Senior Center partnered with Inter-Valley Health Plan for the first "Parade of Talent" show featuring dozens of area seniors showing off their acting, singing, and dancing talents for a crowd of hundreds. The event featured actor Tom Hatten (KCLA Popeye Show, Spies Like Us, Gomer Pyle USMC and more) as the Master of Ceremonies. The show was such a resounding success that organizers have vowed to offer another one in 2008. In January 2008, the City Council authorized the City Manager to enter into a construction contract for the new $14.5 million 45,000 square foot Senior Community Center which will be conveniently located in the downtown core near the luxury affordable senior apartments on Sierra Avenue.
