Classes at Heritage neighborhood center begin May 27

Release Date: May 23, 2008

The Mayor and City Council invite the public to be a part of the new programming offered at the newly constructed Heritage neighborhood center, located at 7350 West Liberty Parkway. Three innovative classes for children include Lights, Camera, Action (May 27), Homework Whiz (June 2), and Tech Zone (May 27).

Lights, Camera, Action is a new course designed for young people who want to work in the entertainment industry. Class instruction helps students to feel comfortable speaking in public, auditioning, cold-reading, and with memorization. Two classes are available depending on age group. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for youth ages 6-9 and 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for students ages 10-17. Either class is $50 for 4 weeks.

Homework Whiz is the perfect tool when parents have run out of answers and youth still need help in understanding the assignment. The professional tutoring staff will take students through the homework assignments step-by-step, or help with test preparation or daily concepts. The staff works with students from PK to high school. Subjects include Math, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Physics, Chemistry, Phonics, Reading, Writing, Spanish, and more. Cost is $96 for a 4 week session on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. beginning Monday, June 2.

Tech Zones are structured to help the whole family. Parents, grandparents, and other adults who want to feel more comfortable at the keyboard should take Adult Tech Zone to learn speed typing, several Microsoft Office™ Applications (Power Point, Excel, and Word), or Internet and HTML. The class begins Tuesday, May 27 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and is $40 for 4 weeks. Kid/Teen Tech Zone for ages 8 to 15 and a Pee Wee Tech Zone for ages 5 to 7 are also available. Teens will learn similar applications as the adults and will be introduced to the basics of creating a slide show, writing books, internet research, and more. Teens meet from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Children learn about proper keyboarding techniques. Classes include copies of lesson plans for taking home, software terms, keyboarding, and hardware information. The class is held from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The Heritage neighborhood center is Fontana’s newest recreational facility. The grand opening for the 10,300 square foot center is Saturday, May 31st from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Center amenities include a computer center, conference room, multi-purpose room, banquet room, warming kitchen, front and rear patios, and the popular Heritage Pool.
