DID YOU KNOW…
Drowning is the second-leading
cause of death for children ages 1 to 14. Each year an average
of ten children under the age of five drown in San Bernardino
County. For each child that drowns, five are hospitalized after
nearly drowning. Some of these suffer brain damage and long term
medical problems.
The vast majority of drowning deaths among children occur in the
family’s own pool or that of a relative or friend.
| Children
can drown during surprisingly short interruptions to visual
contact...the time that it takes to answer a phone call
or go to the door. Typically, the child was last seen indoors
or outdoors far away from the pool or spa. These tragedies
often occur while one or both parents are at home. |

Drowning is “the silent killer” - typically there
is no splashing or crying out with young children.
FIVE TIPS YOU CAN FOLLOW:
- Start
with a non-climbable 5-foot fence that separates your pool/spa
from your home. Move lawn chairs, tables, or other potential climbing
aids away from the fence.
- Add
extra layer of protection such as automatic pool covers and alarms
on doors and windows leading to the water.
- All
fence gates, side gates and doors leading to the pool/spa area
should be self-closing and self-latching with latches above a
child’s reach. Gates should open outward.
- Never
leave a child alone near water to answer the phone, the doorbell,
go to the bathroom, attend to another child or attend to household
chores, even for a few seconds.
- At
large pool parties, designate a responsible adult to watch the
pool as a lifeguard would. Assign other adults to watch the children.
Call
9-1-1 for Emergencies: Know how to contact your local emergency
medical services. Install a phone or keep a cordless phone in the
pool or spa area. Post the emergency numbers in a place that is
easy to see.
Contact your local American
Red Cross to learn how to administer CPR, rescue breathing,
and other life saving techniques for children. To be able to administer
CPR correctly you must be properly trained.
