Aquatic Training Courses

The Aquatic Center is proud to offer community enrichment training in our beautiful classroom. Our classroom, with chairs and tables for 32 participants, overlooks the pool deck. There is a television set and DVD player available with the classroom. Please read below for details about each of our classes.

Note to all participants: Participants MUST attend all dates.
There is also a No Refund policy, so please speak to someone if you have questions before you enroll. Inability to pass a course does not grant a refund.

Lifeguard Training Instructor Course

Learn how to train men and women to become American Red Cross certified lifeguards with our Lifeguard Instructor Training course. This course prepares instructor candidates to teach basic-level courses from the Lifeguarding program including Lifeguarding (with First Aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and more.

Prerequisites:

  • Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate or have successfully completed a Red Cross Lifeguarding (full or review course) or another acceptable lifeguarding course within the last four years.
  • Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.
  • Successfully complete the precourse session period. This includes passing the precourse written exam with a score of 80% or higher for each of the three session and demonstration competency in the precourse skills and scenarios evaluation.

Age: at least 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
Course Length: 40 hours.
Certifications:: Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Certificate.
Course Dates:

  1. Friday, April 30 • 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m & Saturday, May 1 - Sunday, May 2nd • 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Helping an injured swimmer

Lifeguard Training

The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, and prevent drowning and injuries. Successful course completion requires full participation in classroom and skill sessions, as well as successful performance in skill and knowledge evaluations.

Prerequisites:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously (12 laps) (100 yds. front crawl, 100 yds. Breaststroke, 100 yds. choice or combination of front crawl/breaststroke).
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl/breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 9 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object and return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object in about 100 seconds.

Age: Must be 15 years old.
Course length: 30 hours
Certificates Issued: Lifeguard Training and First Aid (valid 3 years); CPR for the Professional Rescuer (valid 1 year)

  1. Feb. 20th, 21st — Feb. 27th, 28th • 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  2. Monday Mar. 22nd — Friday Mar. 26th • 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  3. Apr. 10th, 11th — Apr. 17th, 18th • 9:00a.m. - 6:00p.m.

Info Sessions (Mandatory prior to registration):

  1. January 11th, February 15th, March 15th & April 5th • 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Fees: $150.00

Water Safety Instructor

Successful completion of this course will certify you to teach all levels of American Red Cross progressive swimming courses. Included in this course is American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor training (FIT). All participants MUST attend and successfully complete all class sections to obtain certification.

Kickboard training

Prerequisites:

  • Must be 16 years old.
  • Must know how to properly front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
  • Must be able to tread water and float on the back for 1 minute each.

Age: Must be 16 years old.
Course length: 35 hours.
Certificates Issued: Water Safety Instructor Certificate;
Fundamentals of Instructor Training (valid 1 year)
Course Dates:

  1. Mar. 13 — Mar. 21 (Info Session March 8 • 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.)
  2. May 15 — May 23 (Info Session May 10 • 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.)

CPR for the Professional Rescuer

Practicing CPR

This course covers recognizing and caring for breathing emergencies, cardiac emergencies, two rescuer CPR, use of a BVM and AED. This course is equivalent to the American Heart Association’s CPR Level C. This class is for public safety personnel, athletic trainers, lifeguards, emergency response teams, training academy participants and health care professionals.

Age: Must be 15 years old.
Course length: 8 hours
Certificates Issued: CPR for the Professional Rescuer/ AED (Valid 1 year)

First Aid

Adult, Child, and Infant CPR with First Aid Training

This course provides training for anyone who is interested in learning CPR for emergency situation, whether you are a care taker, baby sitter or just a regular patron this class is great for everyone to take. CPR valid for 1 yr and First Aid Valid for 3 yrs.

Age: 12 yrs and up
Course length: 8 hours
Certificates Issued: Adult, Child, Infant CPR w/ First Aid
Course Dates:

  1. Tuesday Feb. 9 & Thursday Feb. 11 • 6:00 p.m. — 10:00 p.m.
  2. Saturday Mar. 6 • 8:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m.
  3. Tuesday Apr. 6 & Thursday Apr. 8 • 6:00 p.m. — 10:00 p.m.
  4. Saturday May 2 • 8:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m.

Fees: $60.00

SCUBA Certification

Our SCUBA certification course is a multi-component class with classroom, pool, and ocean time. This exciting course lets you discover the thrill of diving under the supervision of a PADI Professional. During your adventure, you will master the skills and concepts necessary for an open-water experience at beautiful Catalina Island.

Prerequisites:

  • Catalina Island trip is a requirement to become SCUBA certified. Participants will discuss travel arrangements with instructor.
  • Participants must supply; mask, snorkel, boots, fins, and gloves.
  • Participants may incur additional fees for class.

Age: Must be 18 and older to join. Ages 13-17 must have written parental consent.
Certification Issued: PADI certification.
Class Dates & Times: TBD
Fees: $300 - Includes instruction, rental equipment for the duration of the class, book, and PADI card.

Safety Training For Swim Coaches

This course provides safety training for swim team coaches and aquatic athletic trainers. This course is the full 8 hour training, no review or fast track options. Valid for three (3) years.

Feeding a baby

Babysitter’s Training

This course provides safety and hands on practical training to become a successful babysitter. This class is the full 8 hour training.

Age: 11 – 15 years old
Course Length: 12 Hours

Course Dates: April 10 & 11 • 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
