Cans For Cash Drive

Cans for cash

It's that time again – to help the City of Fontana retain its recycling champion title and once again win the national Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge! From October 1 to October 31, the Mayor and City Council encourage everyone who lives, works or plays in the City to place their aluminum beverage cans in the curbside recycling bins, designated drop-off centers, or at any of the community centers and parks.

Each year, the U.S. Council of Mayors, Novellis Corporation, and Keep America Beautiful challenge cities across the country to recycle and compete in Cans for Cash. The Cans for Cash drive promotes sustainable living through recycling while providing financial rewards to be used for educational outreach recycling programs. Participating cities are placed into one of four divisions based on the population size of the city.

Recycled cans

In October of 2008 alone, Fontana recycled 266,271 lbs of aluminum cans and the City looks to win again in 2009. "In this time when most communities are talking green, Fontana is putting words to action in our recycling efforts,” says Mayor Mark Nuaimi, adding, “I am proud of our community and I look forward to a repeat.”

Actually, for the City of Fontana, winning this year would really be a “four-peat.” For three years in a row, Fontana has been the national leader for their population category.

For the City of Fontana, the benefits of participating in the challenge has been a three-year net gain of $15,000, and the diversion of nearly 1.25 million total pounds of aluminum beverage cans from the landfill. Additionally, residents have benefitted greatly from the increased availability of recycling opportunities thanks to the monies won in the contests.
