Another Milestone for Fontana’s Senior Community
Perhaps you have seen some construction activity at 16710 Ceres Avenue in Downtown Fontana? The impressive new 43,000 square foot center currently under construction at this location will provide a home-away-from-home for senior residents of Fontana, offering a much needed haven for socializing, learning, and receiving essential services. The highly anticipated Fontana Community Senior Center is scheduled to open in six months, in April 2010.
“As part of its mission to provide for the highest possible quality of life for all its residents, the Fontana City Council set out to design and build a place like no other for Fontana seniors to visit and receive services. In April 2010, that vision will become a reality when we open the doors to the new Senior Center,” says Ken Hunt, city manager.
The existing 3,000 square foot Josephine Knopf Senior Center on Cypress Avenue is too small and inadequate to meet the needs of the growing senior population. At the new center, seniors and residents who visit will have nearly endless activities, services and amenities to enjoy.
There will be plenty of areas to meet and talk with family and friends, including reading lounge areas, a card parlor, center courtyard, and a billiards room. Those desiring a little quiet escape will be able to enjoy a cup a coffee at the coffee bar while reading a newspaper, or browse the Web using the computer learning room or the free Wi-Fi Internet access available throughout the center.
The new center will also be a place where seniors can access transportation services, get their hair done in the beauty salon, enjoy a daily workout in the fitness room, or learn to conquer the computer in one of the many classes offered through the computer lab.
The center features amenities and programs including a 300-seat multi-purpose room that can be used for retirement parties or graduations, a 250-seat dining room that will host the daily Senior Nutrition Program, a digital theater for movie viewing and a fitness and exercise room with state of the art equipment to support active lifestyles.
The health screening rooms are also a vital component of this new facility in which health care professionals can provide services and educational information to seniors on an individual basis. The outdoor areas of the Center will boast a large courtyard with plenty of shade perfect for picnics, special events and other programs.
“The goal of this new facility is to create an environment to support our senior residents and to be able to provide additional needed services. Currently, we are actively encouraging community members to let us know what specific services and programs they would like to see at the new center,” said Mike Wright, community services supervisor.
