Fontana Park wins another award

Fontana Park, the award winning recreational hot spot for Fontana families and neighboring visitors has been honored with yet another award for design and construction. The latest distinction is for one of the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Projects of the Year for 2009.

There are four divisions and five categories for the Public Works Projects of the Year. With construction costing $65 million, Fontana Park fell within the “structure” category of division three for a project of $25 to $75 million. Criteria included good construction management; safety during construction; community relations; protection of the environment during the construction process; unusual accomplishments under adverse conditions; additional conditions such as time or money saving techniques.

Earlier this year, Fontana Park and two of its large scale amenities, the Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Community Center and the BMX/Skate Park, received three Awards of Excellence, the highest recognition given by the California Parks and Recreation Society. The Aquatics Center, another amenity at Fontana Park was also given the Facility Design Achievement Award. This newest honor from the American Public Works Association is a reminder of the investment that has been made in Fontana for high quality, state-of-the-art recreational facilities and venues.

Fontana Park is located at Summit Avenue and Lytle Creek Road, just north of the 210 freeway. A record number of 30,000 visitors attended the opening day events in October, 2008. The recreational area which encompasses 38 acres cost $65 million to construct. Residents of Fontana and neighboring communities enjoy visiting the passive play area, the pavilion, sports arena, and dog park.
