What Veterans Day Means to Me

Adriana Ponce – 1st Place

Veterans Day is very special. It's the day dedicated to commemorating the brave heroes of our country.

Veterans Day is exciting because it's a special day to express our patriotism; I love seeing people wear red, white, and blue. It makes me proud to see our flag wave high ... there is energy flowing everywhere with all the fun events. It's also a special day because it reminds us of the freedom and opportunities that we have.

The quality of life we have today would not have been possible without the sacrifices and bravery of our veterans. They were willing to give up their lives for the flag, the country, and the citizens.

Our country from the very beginning was based on pursuing equality, justice, freedom, and liberty. It's very evident that the country has been successful in achieving all these goals, and it's due to heroes who were willing to make sacrifices.

If it hadn't been for the men who died during the American Revolution, we wouldn't have been able to be an independent country. If it hadn't been for the men who died during the Civil War, we wouldn't have been able to become more united altogether as a country.

Life can be stressful. We are all occupied with pursuing our dreams. However, I feel that it is essential that we should take one day out of our lives to thank those who made it possible for our dreams to come true. This is why Veterans Day is important.

Veterans Day is not just a day that is celebrated to honor those who fought bravely. It is also a day for me to remember what they fought for. They fought for freedom.

Many people in the United States take freedom for granted. We are lucky that we have more freedom than other countries.

I am sad if veterans are not recognized or honored for what they did. Our country would not be as great as it is now if it were not for them.

Sometimes, this special day is overlooked. People are excited when it is Veterans Day because it is a holiday. They are happy because they don't go to work or go to school. They forget the true meaning of the day. I think that Veterans Day is a day for remembering.

I thank God for the freedom that we have in America. For me, our country has so much pride and dignity because of the veterans.

What Veterans Day Means to Me

By Jocelyn Sarmiento – 3rd Place

In history books, we read of the many events where people were to fight in defense of what they and their country thought to be right.

We could simply call these people men, but these men are more than men alone. They are soldiers; protectors of all whom are in danger, heroes of this nation and protectors of people like you and me.

Today, these soldiers are recognized for their heroic actions through Veterans Day, a day dedicated to commemorate all soldiers who have fought for our country.

Many young people today do not show much interest in what Veterans Day is and what it means.

To me, Veterans Day has come to mean a great deal of things. As a young child, after first learning about the attack on Pearl Harbor and the beginning of World War II, I became intrigued by the idea of young men, sons and fathers, leaving their homes and families behind, only to be faced with a life threatening reality. Many shed blood, not knowing whether they would ever go back home.

If we think about it, not many people would probably join the military knowing that they are putting their lives at stake for a growing number of unfamiliar faces.

However, it is those people who have joined the military and fought in these wars whom I have learned to greatly appreciate because of their great service and loyalty to this country and their people.

Their losses could never be regained, their memories could never be
erased, but their sacrifices will always be appreciated.
