Cypress Overcrossing At Interstate 10
Construction Project
The Cypress Avenue Overcrossing is the first of three major interchange related construction projects along the Interstate 10 corridor (I-10 Corridor) in Fontana. These projects are designed to ease the daily commute and provide enhanced access that would serve to unify the city. The Cypress Overcrossing has an eighteen month construction schedule and will be completed and open by early fall 2010. This target date is necessary to accommodate the traffic overflow expected during the reconstruction of the Interstate 10 at Citrus Interchange, which is scheduled to begin construction early 2011.
The I-10 Corridor projects are necessary to facilitate commerce throughout the region. Because of the stature of these projects, funding for the I-10 at Cypress Avenue Overcrossing comes from several sources. Federal funding was secured by Congressman Joe Baca, as well as allocations from State of California Proposition 1B funds, County of San Bernardino Measure I funds, and local funds for the completion of this project.
These projects will be realized through the partnership and cooperation of the California Department of Transportation, the Federal Highways Administration, and the San Bernardino Associated Governments.
I-10/Cypress Avenue Overcrossing Update
October 9, 2009 - The construction of the Cypress Avenue Overcrossing at Interstate 10 is currently underway and is progressing at a speedy rate! The columns for the bridge itself have already been built and the bridge approach on the south side of the freeway has been formed and poured. The next step the contractor will take over the next month is the forming of the approach on the north side of the freeway. Once these approaches are complete and the concrete has been poured over the structures, the contractor will begin the construction of the bridge itself. The first stage of the bridge construction is to install wood forms "falsework." The City expects that the falsework should be up and in place by November of this year.
October 19, 2009 - Interstate 10 freeway will be shut down in order to facilitate the construction of the I-10/Cypress Avenue Overcrossing Project. The contractor will be erecting support structures over the I-10 freeway during the week of October 26, 2009-October 30, 2009. This requires one side of the freeway to be shut down each night from Sierra Avenue to Citrus Avenue. Please note the following dates and times for these closures.
On October 27, 2009, construction was suspended due to high winds; therefore, the full westbound closure was cancelled. The City of Fontana, in cooperation with Caltrans, has revised the schedule as follows:

Why is the Cypress Avenue at
Interstate 10 Overcrossing a priority project?
The bridge across Interstate 10 at Cypress Avenue will achieve several transportation goals:
- It will improve traffic flow by providing a four lane roadway as an alternative to drivers or pedestrians desiring to cross Interstate 10 without need to access the freeway system.
- It will provide fully controlled signalization at both Valley Boulevard and Slover Avenue.
- It will increase emergency response times for Police, Fire and ambulance services.
- It will reduce pollution by allowing through traffic movement that reduces idling time, thereby reducing contaminants in the air.
- The bridge will act as a conduit for future utility services such as water, gas, power, and communications.
- The Cypress Avenue Overcrossing will serve as an alternative to using Citrus Avenue or Cherry Avenue during those interchange reconstruction phases.
