PRESS RELEASE

City Of Fontana Encourages Americans To Get Ready During National Preparedness Month

Release Date: August 28, 2009

Sixth annual NPM helps Americans understand what it truly means to be Ready

The Mayor and City Council announce that the City will participate in the sixth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM) in September. Sponsored by the Ready Campaign, NPM is a nationwide effort designed to increase awareness as well as encourage individuals, families businesses and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies.

This year, NPM is focusing on changing perceptions about emergency preparedness and helping Americans understand what it truly means to be Ready. Preparedness goes beyond fire alarms, smoke detectors, dead-bolt locks and extra food in the pantry. Being Ready includes: getting an Emergency Supply Kit; making a Family Emergency Plan; being informed about emergencies and their appropriate responses; and getting involved in community efforts such as Citizen Corps.

City of Fontana Police Department as part of the local National Preparedness Month activities is hosting its inaugural National Preparedness event and Safety Fair on Saturday, September 19th, from 10 am – 3pm. Attendees will learn how to make an Emergency Supply kit; create a Family Emergency Plan; and receive valuable local emergency preparedness information so they know how to stay informed during an emergency situation. They will also have an opportunity to participate in educational emergency preparedness and safety activities as well as visit vendor booths that will offer information on how to be more prepared in case of an emergency. The vision of the City of Fontana’s National Preparedness and Safety event is to increase awareness and provide resources to encourage individuals, families, businesses and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies, as well as maintain and promote health and safety through Crime Prevention. Mayor Mark Nuaimi stated, “educating our families and businesses to prepare for any type of emergency is a priority for our City leadership.”
